Gowanus Spotlight
Why Gowanus?
Gowanus, long considered an underdog neighborhood, is sandwiched between Park Slope and Carrol Gardens. Translated from Canarsee Indian as "The Sleeper", Gowanus was settled by Dutch farmers In 1636. Over the centuries Gowanus has seen it all: from Revolutionary War battles, to heavily Industrialization, to late-night mobster action that would make even John Gotti blush. Fast-forward to now: the Federal Environmental Protection Agency recently allocated $506M to clean up the polluted Gowanus Canal. That, in turn, led to the city approving a rezoning that paves the way for 8,500 new apartments predicted by 2035.
