Red Hook

Why Red Hook?

With panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, dramatic loft architecture, and a landscape still richly textured by its nautical past, Red Hook is one of Brooklyn's most photogenic and atmospheric neighborhoods. Bordered by Carroll Gardens and the Columbia Street Waterfront District, what truly sets it apart is its deliberate remove from the city's transit grid — a handful of buses and ferries, and that's about it — a quirk that locals will tell you is less a drawback than a point of pride, lending the neighborhood a rare quietude that most of Brooklyn surrendered long ago. The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel puts Midtown within easy reach by car, yet Red Hook has managed to hold onto a gritty, unhurried character that feels increasingly scarce in today's Brooklyn. Predominantly a neighborhood of townhomes, it has nonetheless attracted developer attention in recent years, with several large-scale residential projects proposed over the last decade.

Where is Red Hook?

Red Hook is bounded by the Bay, the Gowanus Canal, and the neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. While transit options are limited, the B61 Bus and the NYC Ferry are just enough for residents.

Red Hook Grain Terminal and The Loujaine are two derelict sites, one a grain elevator built 1922 and empty since 1965, the other is a dry cargo ship built in Japan in 1966 and floating in Red Hook since the '80s. Both are managed by a local concrete magnate named John Quadrozzi, who has been trying to preserve and grow his floating ecosystem to promote sustainable use and possible conversion to co-working space, a casino, or affordable housing. In the meantime, The Grain Terminal has been the site for some incredible EDM shows.
