Why Fort Greene?
This month we're turning to a neighborhood near and dear to us: Fort Greene. Over the past two decades it has transformed wildly. Barclays Center rose to the south, the Brooklyn Navy Yard came back to life to the north, and new towers keep reshaping the skyline. 20 Rockwell Place, a 40-story rental with 1,098 units, opened in 2025, and Alloy Development's plan for the former Boys & Girls Club site at 240 Nassau Street would add 1,500 rentals, 300 of them affordable, along with a new home for P.S. 287 and space for the Cultural Museum of African Art. Its Historic District still protects the brownstones, Italianate row houses and Queen Anne–style homes that line its leafy streets, and BAM remains a cultural anchor. Spike Lee, who grew up here, has spoken of a culture "laid down for generations," and despite all the change, that still holds true. In 2023, Time Out named Fort Greene NYC's coolest neighborhood.
Where is Fort Greene?
Fort Greene is bounded by the Brooklyn Navy Yard to the north, Atlantic Avenue to the south, Flatbush Ave to the west, and Vanderbilt Avenue to the east. Transit is excellent: the C & G trains inside and the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, R, and LIRR to the south at Barclays Center. Don't forget about the ferry too!
